TRS update

November 10, 2009

It’s done! At least, the first draft is. Editing to come, of course, even though I’ve been editing all along.

It feels odd.

And I’m really not sure if it’s good or not. Some of it, I think. I read fast, so writing is like reading but enforcing a speed limit. I can’t possibly type as fast as I think. I think I’ll put it away for a couple of days and then look at it again.

And that thing where writers say they don’t know where their characters are going? That happened once in each of the last two chapters. It’s kind of spooky.

Just so you remember how it happened…

The wall came down. Why?

Some of you are too young. Some don’t remember, you pot-smokin’ hippies. You probably don’t remember much but “Full House.” OK, so here’s what happened twenty years ago…

President Ronald Reagan, Ronaldus Magnus, the greatest President of the Twentieth Century, made a speech in 1987 against the wishes of his own advisers and State Department. He said, “Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Reagan at the Brandenberg Gate

In 1989, the Gate was opened. In 1990, the Wall came down.

It wasn’t Gorbachev, it wasn’t anybody else…it was the courage of Ronald Reagan.

God knows we need his kind today.
