CD(s) of the Month

June 17, 2008

Thought I’d forget, didn’t you? Well, this is not exactly a CD of the month pick. It’s a series by a related group of artists.

If you’ve ever visited the American Pavilion at Epcot Center at Walt Disney World in Florida, there’s a good chance you heard an eight-part vocal group called the Voices of Liberty. The arrangements the group sings were done by Derric Johnson, who also for years let an a capella vocal group called Regeneration. Their “Christmas In Velvet” recordings are beautiful.

There have been many members of the Voices of Liberty over the years. Now, calling themselves the Liberty Voices, some of the more current members have a web site and some recordings of their own outside of their work for The Mouse. They include some of the traits of barbershop harmonies, which often use reinforcement of the harmonic series to make the group sound bigger than it is. Derric Johnson’s arrangements are clever and tasteful; the performances impeccable. The group has mainly recorded Americana, patriotic and Christian music, and all are much more interesting to listen to than most vocal versions of these familiar pieces. All their music, including those recordings listed as having been performed by “Regeneration,” are highly recommended.
